How to choose cycling shorts

By Fred Matheny and Ed Pavelka of www.RoadBikeRider.com.

We plan to feature a number of informative articles over the next few months and thought you might like to start with this one.

Luke Kempson update

I thought I would give you a summary report of the fundraising effort undertaken yesterday by Bob Scott, Judy Scott and Megan Scott to assist Brian & Jo Kempson with expenses incurred this year after their son’s tragic accident.
Luke is still in rehabilitation in Shenton Park and could not attend the BBQ yesterday. Luke is permanently paralysed from the ribs down.  He has movement in his arms and shoulders and is working hard to regain movement in his hands and fingers. He still has a burn wound on his lower back/buttock which is slow to heal due to transfers from bed to chair.
The aim of the day was to raise enough funds to purchase a specialised wheelchair for Luke. Funds raised for the day totalled approx $16,500.  A specialised wheelchair is around $17,000
Thanks to the morning swimming group for the donations and ticket sales of the Christmas Hamper – we raised over $800
Megan Scott organised a motorbike ride finishing at the venue – raised over $1000
Paintings and wine were auctioned on the day.
Thanks also to those people who could not attend yesterday but sent donations.
Bob Scott is continuing with his support for Luke. The next target is a specialised bed worth approx $13,500.
If anyone would like to help in any way please contact Bob on 9456 5609.  His address is 6 Spata Lane Canning Vale 6155

FTC Points races 2008/09
The Fremantle Triathlon Club committee has chosen 7 races on the TWA race calendar for members to accrue points towards the Clubs’ Open and Age Group Championship. Winners will be those with the most points earned from their best 4 FTC Points Races. To be eligible for championship status, a minimum of 4 events must be completed. The Interclub event in Mandurah is extremely important to the club, and therefore double points have been allocated for this race. The committee has also decided to have a Club Championship race this season which will be the Point Walter event in March. Prizes will be awarded for both the Sprint and Olympic distances.
Points will be allocated as follows:

  • 1st placed club member in each age group earns 20 points
  • 2nd placed club member in each age group earns 10 points
  • 3rd placed club member in each age group earns 5 points
  • All other participating members will earn 1 point

Categories in each male and female sections will be:

  • Open
  • Under 20 years
  • 20-29 years
  • 30-39 years
  • 40-49 years
  • 50+ years

When planning your season please make these races a priority. The club tent will be setup for members to congregate before and after each race. Our Promotions Officer, Gaye McKean has worked closely with our fantastic sponsors who are providing prizes for each club race, as well as spot prizes on the day.

All the best to everyone for a safe and successful season.

FREO TRI CLUB SOCIAL RUN -Friday nights

Friday nights are for social runs. I look forward to seeing you all in the Fremantle Surf life saving club at 5.30pm we will meet on the wall in front of the café and head towards Cottosloe Beach. The run is open to all and will be as far as you want to go (or in my case as far as I can go). Drinks will be available afterwards at bar prices from the club.
Over the coming weeks we will then incorporate a BBQ and mini time trials.
For those who don’t know where the club is it is situated on:
Leighton Beach Port Beach Rd Leighton
I look forward to seeing you all there and welcome all new and potential club members to come down and make yourself known. Let the season begin.

UPDATE:

Our first Friday social run was an enjoyable half hour run heading towards Cottosloe. After, we enjoyed a quiet drink before heading home. This is a work in progress and club member’s input is invaluable.
A big thanks to all those that turned up.
Would a later start be better (6pm) or have we started too early in the season? Let me know.  ashwil3@bigpond.com

I look forward too seeing you over the next few weeks. Remember 5.30pm ever Friday at the Fremantle Surf Life Saving Club. For the next couple of weeks it will just be drinks. Our first BBQ and Mini time trial will be soon.

FREO TRI CLUB WEBSITE FORUM

A new section of the website has been added to allow general chitchat to occur. Simply click on the "FORUM" link on the left and register once. You will then be allowed to read and post questions, answers or profanities that you feel others in the club should hear.

This is an experiment and if it is either unpopular or abused I will get rid of it (or you....heheheh.)

THE 'TRIATHLON' WORLD CHAMPS

Big congratulations go to Jane Yovich, Richard Burnell, Brynt McSwain and David Wrighton who competed in the 2008 Triathlon World Championships last month. By all accounts the conditions were not..er...ideal. Apparently even the converted Pommy vet felt the cold and he has spent much of his early life with only one warm arm harassing farm stock at 4am on Northern English winter mornings.

Tameka Day has written a summary race report from the 'dry warmth' of western Perth and Richard Burnell has written a great report from a participants point of view. Incidentally Tameka, if Richard "finished strongly in about the middle of his age group (50-54 yrs)" does that mean he finished aged 52?

ps. Richard, i hope you dont mind i corrected you spelling of the word "shemozzle"

Read Tameka and Richards reports here.

and Brynt and Janes here

THE FTC COMMITTEE MEETINGS

14th October
11th November
9th December

All members are welcome to attend. Please contact Yvonne rash on 0438326775 for time and venue.

Many thanks

THE FTC QUESTIONNAIRE

In an attempt to try and improve the service the FREMANTLE TRIATHLON CLUB provides to its members, we would find it very helpful if you would agree to complete a questionnaire by following the link Questionnaire

This should take less than 5 minutes and might make the club a better place for all!

ENTERTAINMENT BOOKS

Hi everybody
Hope your off season training is going well. Not too much comfort food….I have three Entertainment Books left.

They are $65 and support the running of your Club. Please see the attached flyer.

I have to return them in two weeks so if you want one or know someone else who wants one, please email me at barry.dejong@iinet.net.au

NEW SPONSOR JOINS FTC

inage

Transition Wear joined Fremantle Triathlon Club as one of our Sponsors this year. Many of you have collected Spot Prizes from their generous contribution throughout the season. For all your quality race gear contact Brian Kempson and his team to satisfy your requirements.  You can contact them direct or you will find their tent on most race days.

Brian also runs Endurance Fitness and coaches many of the Club’s athletes.

(Hints on how to avoid)  DRAFTING

The draft zone is 7m back from front of another bike and 3m wide (35m by 5m back from front of a vehicle).  There are banners near and in transition illustrating the draft zone for bikes and you should take a good look at one.  Most competitors are surprised at how big 7m x 3m is.

Once into a draft zone you have 15secs to pass (ie get part of your front wheel past the front edge of the other bike) and for all that time you must be seen to be progressing through the draft zone.  If you run out of time you must back off right out of the other bike draft zone before trying again.

If you are passed it is your responsibility to clear out of the back of the overtaking bike draft zone and must do so within 15 secs.  Only after exiting the zone can you try to overtake back.

Unless overtaking, you must keep as far to the left as reasonably possible otherwise you will be seen as blocking.

You must not overtake on the left

You must not cross the dividing line between carriageways which carry bikes in both directions

Do NOT assume you will be warned before being penalised or reported.

                                                PENALTY

If pulled by a Technical Officer (normally by whistle, being shown a yellow card, your number being called and being informed of the nature of your offence) you must report to the Penalty Box near transition at the end of the lap you are completing.  The penalty for a ½ IM event is 5 minutes.

Failure to report to the Penalty Box or two yellow cards are both grounds for disqualification as is abuse of a Technical or other Official (and any other blatant disregard of the Rules)

                                    PENALTY BOX PROTOCOL

Competitors serving a penalty will be shown where to queue up and are required to maintain their place in the queue standing holding their bike upright and with their helmet on and securely fastened.  This is not an opportunity for a lie down!

Competitors needing to use toilets or otherwise distressed should normally take care of it BEFORE reporting to the Penalty Box.  In emergency, with permission, you could leave the Box but you must leave your bike where directed by the TO in charge of the Box and might expect to have to restart the penalty on return.

NOTE   This is only a brief summary of the Race Competition Rules as they relate to the bike leg.  It is YOUR responsibility to make yourself familiar with the Rules.

GO THE JUNIORS!

Two of our up and coming Athletes have been flying the flag for WA out in Tasmania at the National schools Triathlon In March and elequent reports from them can be seen on this attached document.. Well done Paige and Jaz. keep it up.
